Dance in the Movies
Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, John Travolta and Billy Elliot. We have all seen them dance on the silver screen. But what significance do the dance numbers have in the movies? Through the ages, dance has been used to illustrate different emotions and themes. Also, the dance genres have been affected when they have been transferred on to the screen. Facts, anecdotes and several movie cuts are mixed together in this lecture on dance in the movies from the 19th century until today.
WORKSHOPS
Repertory from current Performance
A practical workshop in the studio where a part of a choreography is taught, or choreographic concepts of the performance are explored. Please contact Marika Hedemyr for information on current performances in the repertory.
Dance and Movement Analysis – explored in the studio
This workshop will let you explore and learn dance and movement analysis by working in the studio. The theory, which is based on Rudolf von Laban’s research and the choreological perspective, will be explored in improvisation and composition exercises working both individually and in groups. We will explore movement rythms, shape, space, and non verbal communication. The knowledge can be used to verbalise what you see, as composition tools, or as inspiration for chorographical experiments and improvisation. You should wear clothes for moving/dancing and bring pen and paper.
Brasilian Dance
An energetic workshop to rhythmic music where you will learn technique, expressions and short choreographies from one or several brasilian dance styles. Samba: The most known Brazilian dance. Characterized by quick steps, mobile hips and soft shoulder movements. A playful dance where each persons will develop her creativity and a keen ear. Afro-Brazilian dance: Traditional and contemporary, street- and carnivals dances. Afro Brazilian dance is full off energy, explosive and graceful.
Power and Relationships through Body Language
In our daily life we are constantly using our body language. For me as a choreographer it is a source of inspiration. At your workplace you have probably experienced that a posture can tell more than words at times. Attitudes, hierarchy, values, and issues of equality are shown by subtle means and influence how we interact with other people. The workshop offers a playful opportunity to learn more about the non verbal signals and how we can interpret them. We will also watch film clips from films, dance- and theatre performances in order to see how body language is used to quickly portray a given situation.
